Infield Drill

New In-Motion animated QuickTime version now available for WebBall Team Players. Please sign in or join.

Objective is to work on infield throws with the added challenge of a runner scoring from second. For team age 11-12 and up.

RED lines are direction of ball throws or simulated hits.

BLUE and BLACK lines are direction of player movement.

Set Up

The drill starts with one player in each infield position, a catcher, and a center fielder backing up the shortstop.

Rest of team is waiting in right field to move into and through the player rotation. (They could be working on pop-ups or other fielding plays with a second coach while waiting to enter.)

Players rotate through the fielding positions: 1B, C, 3B, SS, CF, 2B.

Part way through the drill, the second baseman becomes a simulated base runner trying to score from 2nd.

WebBall received information on this drill from different sources, but it would seem to originate with a coach in Florida, Randy Sullivan (we have not been able to contact him to verify). Our version, #2, changes the player rotation sequence from the likely original. Also, because most fielding action is on the left side, we have the rest of team in right.

This drill is also included in Defending Your Turf. Order the complete field manual in print or chapter 9 as a PDF.
